HLTWHS005 – Conduct manual tasks safely (Release 1)

Performance evidence.

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:

• followed legally compliant workplace procedures to prepare for and complete at least 3 different manual tasks relevant to the work role
• contributed to a consultation process about improving manual handling safety

Knowledge evidence.

The candidate must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:

• key information from work health and safety (WHS) regulations relating to manual tasks and national code of practice
• role and responsibilities of the employer and employees in relation to manual handling safety
• ways in which individual workers are involved in consultation about workplace health and safety
• reporting mechanisms required for workplace injury and compensation claims
• key aspects of the risk management approach to manual tasks
• risk factors and potential sources of risks of hazardous manual tasks:
  • repetition
  • forces
  • postures
  • vibration
  • systems of work
• types of manual task activity and the types of injuries that can result
• the relationship between the human body and risk of injury from performing manual tasks
• functions of the human body:
  • basic function of the spine
  • body postures
  • types of muscles
  • principles of levers
• manual handling techniques that support safe work practice:
  • preparing the load/client
  • preparing the environment
  • using the stronger muscles in the legs where possible, rather than spinal muscles
  • maintaining a neutral spine when lifting and carrying
  • using two hands to lift or carry
  • keeping the load close to the body/centre of gravity
  • avoiding lifting objects above shoulder height
  • minimising repetitive movements
  • positions not held for long periods of time
  • avoiding twisting by repositioning feet whilst turning
• types and operational features of mechanical aids, tools and equipment

Blended – 2 hour practical review and assessment session.
Additional time is required for online learning and assessment, (approx. 8 to 12 hours).

Face to Face – 4 hour 40 minute knowledge and practical review and assessment session.
Additional time is required for new learners to do online introductory learning (approx. 8 to 12 hours)

Blended – online learning and knowledge assessment with an in-classroom face to face practical session with skills assessment.

Face to Face – introductory online learning, only for students who have not studied the unit within last 5 years. Face to face classroom session including Knowledge and Practical reviews, and assessments.

N.B. – For students in face to face who do not want to do online pre-course work, evidence of competence in the unit within the last 5 years will be required.

Participants must:

• have foundation skills in Language, Literacy and Numeracy. (ACSF 2 to 3)
• be capable with online learning platforms and use of internet connected devices.
• be capable of lifting and moving small loads (boxes)
• have a USI (Unique Identification Number)
• For Face to Face students wanting to refresh their qualification or bypass introductory online learning, students will need to declare their ability to supply evidence of studying the unit within 5 years

On successful completion participants will be able to:

• Identify manual tasks involving risk to self or others including risk factors that make task hazardous, nature and extent of risk and follow procedures on controlling hazardous manual tasks.
• Prepare for manual tasks by preparing workplace layout and environment, organising the task and workflow, preparing loads for movement, selecting personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensuring task is within personal capabilities.
• Complete manual tasks by using appropriate posture and handling techniques, selecting, adjusting and using mechanical aids according to manufacturers instructions and pacing and scheduling tasks according to procedures.
• Contribute to safe work practices by identifying and reporting hazardous manual tasks, incidents, symptoms and injuries to supervisors according to organisation procedures. Particpating in workplace safety activities and improvement of tasks and contributing to risk management approach to reduce risks from manual tasks.

This unit can contribute to a broad range of qualifications and is desirable in workplaces where manual handling is a key component of the job role.

This certificate normally does not require renewal. However, it is best to check with your employer for any renewal requirements they may have for this qualification.

Life saving First Aid has regular scheduled sessions for this unit across its locations. Participants can enrol online and should enrol at least 48 hours prior to their selected session time in order to allow sufficient time to complete the online learning and knowledge assessment component prior to attending the practical session.

Life Saving First Aid does not issue statement of attainments that are achieved wholly through recognition of units completed at other RTOs. In plain English, this means we do not issue credit transfer for stand-alone units, including HLTWHS005 – Conduct manual tasks safely.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available for this unit of competency. It is important to note that RPL is an assessment process, and regardless of how skills and knowledge have been attained, assessment must be conducted with the same rigour as any other assessment process.

RPL allows students to reduce or bypass the learning part of a program because they already have the knowledge and skill to demonstrate competency. It does not reduce the assessment requirements for the program.

Total tuition fees for this Course are $130*

There will be no additional costs for RPL applications and assessment as these are included in the total tuition fees for this Course.

Note: No GST is applicable to National Recognised Training. Students will only receive their Testamur (certificate) once all course requirements have been met and all fees have been paid in full.

A $10 Certificate Printing and Postage Fee is additional if a hard copy statement of attainment is required. (An electronic copy is emailed in pdf format for no additional charge)

A $50 Resource Printing, Postage and Administration Fee is additional if the participant requires hardcopy versions of Learner Guide, Assessment Booklet and Supplementary Resources.

*This fee is for our publicly listed courses available for enrolment via our website. This fee may be negotiated for large groups.

Tuition fees include access to all online (electronic versions of) content required for knowledge learning and assessment.

If necessary as mentioned in fees section, a hardcopy learning resources kit can be printed and posted to participants.

Students will be responsible for and required to have their own internet connected device (and internet connection) required to access and complete online learning and assessment via the Axcelerate platform if electing to do the pre-course work via the online platform.

This unit has a knowledge assessment which comprises of a mixture of multiple choice, selectable fill in the blank, statement ordering and case study / short answer style questions. This assessment is normally completed online via the Axcelerate LMS.

N.B. If the student elects the hardcopy assessment booklet this knowledge assessment is completed within the booklet by circling selections, writing in the number of the order or writing in short answers.

The practical or skills assessment session contains a variety of scenario based simulations where the participant must apply knowledge and skills to the simulation to provide the correct response in accordance to observation checklists. The online learning material goes through the correct procedures required by the simulations, and your trainer / assessor will demonstrate skills and allow for ample practice prior to assessment.

Student’s can request a pre-enrolment consultation/interview to determine support requirements. Life Saving First Aid will assess and determine if a student requires additional support to assist them with completion of the Qualification. This will include a Language Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment prior to enrolment.

All students will be provided with options of learning support by Life Saving First Aid to ensure students are adequately supported to ensure quality training outcomes.

Not applicable

A student must be found to have the necessary LLND requirements as per entry requirements.

A student must have a USI, and be able to complete 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR whilst kneeling on the floor to be found competent in this unit.

As previously mentioned, students who enrol in the face to face delivery mode who do not want to do online pre-course work will require evidence of competence in the unit within the last 5 years.
